Land, Sea and Sky

There is something primal about the natural environment — and a constant source of artistic inspiration. I grew up and lived for many years on the West Coast of Florida surrounded by water observing the ever changing weather patterns and panoramic views of land, sea and sky. One cannot help but become acutely aware of the atmosphere, the predictably unpredictable weather changes that can both terrify and delight. Sometimes unsettling and sometimes serine, these scenes borrow from various traditions and are inspired by such diverse artists as Hiroshige, Turner, and Yves Tanguy. In their simplest form, I like to think of these as visual Haikus and, in some cases, visual poems — like looking at the world through a rain-streaked window.

The world is a strange place, and my paintings are an attempt to capture its mysterious essence.
— Yves Tanguy
